A very rare Gorham mixed metal pepper shaker, dating to circa 1880. Realistically modelled in the form of a pomegranate. With patinated copper body and silver leaves / stopper. An example of this shaker is on display at the Brooklyn Museum, NYC. The museum description includes the following:
The vegetable-shaped salt and pepper shakers and
the curvilinear flask are splendid examples of the
Aesthetic Movement style, which appeared strikingly new and
modern to consumers at the time. The form of the shakers
was inspired by realistic Japanese metal objects with
which Americans were just becoming familiar.
